Dear Mr.Kilmer

 The novel that I have learned is Dear Mr. Kilmer by Anne Schraff.The event that changes the life of a character was when Joyce Kilmer died.It affected Richard and Pa.

The event that I changed Richard's life was when Joyce Kilmer died.Richard know that Mr.Kilmer was died when he came to Schermers' house to decided to drop in and see if Hannah wanted to walk with him the rest of the way to the post office.But when Richard knocked the door,Hannah opened and said to him that Joyce Kilmer was killed.Then,the Schermers' drew Richard into the house.After that,Mr Schermer gently handed a newspaper from Sioux City and shows him the headline ''Beloved American Poet Killed in Battle'' in the newspaper.Richard gazes at the smiling face of his poet mentor and friend,amazed that he is only seeing his face for the first time after his death.The article said it had happened in the early dawn of July 30.Sergeant Kilmer was one of the men moving with his regiment. Many of Kilmer's comrades had already been mowed down by enemy fire like grain before a tresher.Joyce Kilmer was struck in the head by the bullet.Instantly he sank to the already blood-soaked earth of the battlefield.Dodging the snipers's fire,his buddies carried his body away to a safe place behind the ridge.There are a medic looked at him briefly but could do nothing to save him. 

After he finished reading the newspaper,he was suprised to feel no grief.Infact,he seemed to feel nothing at all.Then,he became aware of something in his hip pocket.It was the letter he had written to Mr. Kilmer just a little while ago-the letter he had been on his way to the post office to mail.But now,there was no one to send it to.Suddenly,the tears begin to well up.But he could not break down and cry in front if the Schermer.He just could not.He hastily thanked them for letting him know,said goodbye,and fled their house.Because of the news about Kilmer's died,Richard whispered to himself that he never want to write another poem.Richard is deeply dissapointed and decides to stop writing another new poem.Anyway, he goes back home and writes another poem entitled "In Memory of Sergeant Joyce Kilmer."After writing  it,he wants to share  it to somebody.He shares it with the Schermers  because only they will understand.Hannah cries and Mr Schermers shed his tears.Richars feels guilty because his poem makes them think about Otto.Mr Schermers suggests Richard to send it to TurtleLake Weekly because they were many felt the same way as them.

   Third, it affected to Pa. Initially cold and distant towards Richard although they always work together at the farm. However, this situation changed. Their relationship was strengthened after Mr Kilmer’s death in the war. The change happened after Richard wrote a poem to commemorate his death. In that poem, Richard used the same phrase that went through Pa’s mind during Uncle Roland’s funeral. The phrase was ‘A world is gone. A world is dead and gone’. The poem was published in ‘The Turtle Lake Weekly’ and Pa was very impressed of Richard.

In conclusion, we must always be patient with all the tests that come to us because in every test there is definitely a lesson behind it.Good things come to those who wait.
